La nuova Conferenza ‘Africa: 53 Paesi, Una Unione – Le Nuove Sfide‘ si è tenuta a Washington, DC il 15 e il 16 giugno, 2011. Questa è stata la seconda di una serie di tre conferenze: la prima si è tenuta a Bologna lo scorso anno, e l’ultima si terrà ad Addis Abeba nel 2012.
L’obiettivo principale era di offrire ai decisori politici ed agli esperti, la possibilità di discutere la rilevanza dell’ integrazione regionale e continentale nella soluzione di importanti problemi africani, tra cui quelli generati dai recenti sviluppi che ora sfidano le nostre convinzioni sulla libertà e sulla democrazia.
Quest’anno la nostra Fondazione per la Collaborazione tra i Popoli si è alleata con la Scuola di Studi Internazionali Johns Hopkins e con il Centro Studi Internazionali Woodrow Wilson per l’organizzazione di questa serie di eventi.
La conferenza è stata incentrata sul ruolo delle Nazioni Unite, dell’ Unione Africana, dell’ Unione europea e dei governi degli Stati Uniti e della Cina. Sono state coinvolte importanti organizzazioni internazionali come la Banca Mondiale, la Banca Africana per lo Sviluppo, l’Organizzazione Mondiale del Commercio, e la Commissione Economica per l’Africa.
La conferenza di apertura si è tenuta il 15 giugno presso il Centro Studi Internazionale Woodrow Wilson (palazzo Ronald Reagan) e le sessioni di lavoro si sono invece svolte presso la Scuola di Studi Internazionali Johns Hopkins il 16 giugno.
Tutti i partecipanti hanno avuto la possibilità di offrire il loro contributo personale e di partecipare alla discussione su tutte le questioni in gioco.
